"I have watched Matt work with a broad range of clients over the years and the most frequent description of him has been that of ‘professional’. His quiet and conscientious approach is widely appreciated by his clients and helps to bring them quickly and safely to a stage of independence with their own climbing... I have watched Matt team lead and carry sole responsibility for over thirty instructors in challenging environmental conditions and under difficult constraints and logistical complications. This demanding long term project was highly successful in most part due to Matt’s quiet insight, humour and expertise. He knows his field of work and has the confidence to listen carefully to others before making a decision. His depth of experience is clear in his often imaginative choice and use of venues, getting the very best of the day for his clients whatever the conditions. He is very safety conscious and his clients often comment on how safe they have felt in his hands. He has a quiet, controlled and enthusiastic manner which spreads confidence to both clients and colleagues."

"(Matt) has always impressed me with his professional attitude and commitment to gaining the best from his staff and students.   Matt is trusted by his managers and respected by his peers and subordinates, who all feed off
his genuine talent and an infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors making him a pivotal team member. His skills and abilities in the technical aspects of all the sports in which he participates continues to improve not only through hard work, but through a natural ability and a love of the sports themselves."

I have personally witnessed (Matt's) performance as a stellar educational leader and I continue to be in awe of his passion for teaching, leading and learning.

Matt is a dynamic educator and administrator who believes in success for all students.

Matt is a confident communicator, instructor and workshop presenter and he models high expectations of students and staff. I have always known him as a collaborator and a motivator, and he sees challenges as an opportunity for growth and learning.

The stunning mountains and coastline of Snowdonia and North Wales are a short drive away.

Great Orme Vertical was established by outdoor instructor Matt Jones after returning to his native North Wales following over 20 years working in Adventure Training and Outdoor Education throughout the UK, Europe, Middle East, Africa and China.

Matt was born and raised in Wales. His first experience of mountaineering was at the age of 3 when he climbed his first Snowdonia peak with his family.

Over the next 10 years, Matt's love of the mountain environment grew during family trips to mountain regions throughout Europe and the US. In 1987 he began rock climbing at the age of 13. His interest in developing new routes began with first ascents of "The Bloopers..." now graded F8a and a solo ascent of an E4 in 1989, and numerous first ascents of bolted and traditionally protected routes up to F7b+/E6 in the years that followed.

He took a year off from university teaching studies in order to "get climbing out of his system". That year off has become 23 years and counting... Matt has continued to climb extensively and passionately, and pursue a worldwide career in  the outdoors as a mountaineering instructor, rope access technician, industrial safety consultant, programming specialist, senior trainer and manager.

Matt holds the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award, is an Accredited Practitioner for the Institute for Outdoor Learning and a Master Educator for the Leave No Trace organisation. He is a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and fully insured for all activities he offers.

I'd love to hear from you
